How does the FIRE calculation work?

Your FIRE number is the annual spending you want divided by a safe withdrawal rate. The 4% rule says you can draw 4% of your pot a year, so you need 25 times your spending: £30,000 needs £750,000. The years figure compounds your savings at the real return you choose.

Put numbers on the saving side with the Savings Goal Calculator, then compare with a normal retirement plan in the Pension Calculator.

It says you can withdraw 4% of your portfolio in year one, then adjust for inflation, with a good chance of lasting 30 years. Early retirees often use 3–3.5% for a longer horizon.

How much do I need to retire early?

Multiply your annual spending by 25 (4% rule) or 28–33 for a more cautious 3–3.5% rate.

What is Lean FIRE and Fat FIRE?

Lean FIRE is retiring on a frugal budget, here 75% of your spending. Fat FIRE is a more generous lifestyle, here 150%.
