How does the Lifetime ISA bonus work?
For every £4 you save in a Lifetime ISA, the government adds £1 — a 25% bonus, up to £1,000 a year on the full £4,000 annual limit. You can open one between 18 and 39, keep contributing until you turn 50, and use the money penalty-free either toward a first home worth up to £450,000, or from age 60 for anything. The £4,000 limit counts toward your overall £20,000 ISA allowance and is fixed until at least April 2031. A consultation on a replacement First-Time Buyer ISA is underway, but it doesn't change anything for LISA holders in 2026/27.
Frequently asked questions
How much is the LISA government bonus?
25% of what you pay in, up to £1,000 a year on the £4,000 annual limit. The bonus is added automatically, usually monthly, and isn't due to change — the government has confirmed the £4,000 limit stays fixed until at least April 2031.
What happens if I withdraw from a LISA early?
Unless it's for a first home (up to £450,000) or you're 60+, withdrawals incur a 25% government penalty — which claws back more than just the bonus, since 25% of your own contributions is taken too, not only the 25% bonus you received.
Is the Lifetime ISA being replaced?
The government is consulting on a new First-Time Buyer ISA to eventually replace it, expected around April 2028 at the earliest — existing LISA holders can keep contributing under current rules in the meantime, and nothing changes for 2026/27.
