What are the current minimum wage rates?

From 1 April 2026, the National Living Wage for workers aged 21 and over is £12.71 an hour. Workers aged 18 to 20 must be paid at least £10.85 an hour, and 16-17 year-olds or first-year apprentices at least £8.00 an hour. Almost everyone who works in the UK is entitled to at least these rates — agency workers, part-time staff and casual workers included. If you enter a hourly rate below the legal minimum for your band, this calculator flags it so you can raise it with your employer or contact ACAS. Once you know your pay, the Take-Home Pay Calculator shows what you'll actually receive after tax and NI.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if I'm being paid below minimum wage?

Keep records of your hours and pay, then raise it with your employer first — many underpayments are genuine payroll mistakes. If that doesn't resolve it, HMRC enforces the minimum wage and ACAS offers free, confidential advice.

Does minimum wage apply to apprentices?

Yes, but at a lower rate (£8.00/hr) for their first year, or if they're under 19. After the first year, apprentices aged 19 or over move onto the normal rate for their age band.

Can deductions bring me below minimum wage legally?

Deductions for the employer's own benefit — like uniform costs or till shortages — usually can't take your effective pay below minimum wage. Accommodation charges are allowed, but only up to a set daily offset.
