How much paint do I need for a room?

Multiply the room perimeter by the wall height, subtract doors and windows, then multiply by the number of coats and divide by the tin coverage. Most emulsions cover about 12 m² per litre; textured walls and bare plaster soak up more.

Frequently asked questions

How many litres of paint for a 4×3 m room?

With 2.4 m walls, two coats and a door and window, you need roughly 5 litres of emulsion for the walls.

How many coats of paint do I need?

Two coats is standard. Going from dark to light, or painting new plaster, may need a mist coat plus two.

Should I buy extra paint?

Round up and keep a little for touch-ups; mixing batches later can give slight colour differences.
