How does the Bitcoin halving work?

Every 210,000 blocks the reward miners receive for a new block is cut in half. The block height is read live from the Bitcoin network. Dividing the blocks remaining by the average block time (about 10 minutes) estimates the date. Real block times vary, so the date moves by days as hash rate changes.
