How do you calculate ROI?

ROI = (final value − amount invested) ÷ amount invested × 100. Investing £10,000 and ending with £13,500 is a 35% ROI. ROI ignores time, so the annualised figure (the compound growth rate) is what to compare between investments held for different lengths.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good ROI?

It depends on risk and time. Stock markets have historically returned mid-single digits to around 10% a year before inflation, but returns are never guaranteed.

What is the difference between ROI and annualised return?

ROI is the total gain. Annualised return spreads it over the years held, so a 35% gain over three years is about 10.5% a year.

Does ROI include fees and tax?

Only if you include them in the amounts. Deduct costs from the final value for a net figure.
