What are MEV, MAV and MRV?

Training volume research generally frames weekly sets per muscle group across three landmarks: Minimum Effective Volume (MEV), the least you can do and still grow; Maximum Adaptive Volume (MAV), the range where most productive training happens; and Maximum Recoverable Volume (MRV), the ceiling beyond which extra sets add fatigue faster than they add growth. Beginners typically need less volume to keep progressing since almost any consistent stimulus drives adaptation early on, while advanced lifters often need to push toward the higher end of these ranges as their bodies adapt to lower workloads. Small muscle groups also tend to tolerate — and need — more weekly sets than large ones, partly because they're indirectly worked by compound lifts targeting the larger groups.

Frequently asked questions

What is MEV, MAV and MRV?

Minimum Effective Volume (MEV) is the least training needed to grow; Maximum Adaptive Volume (MAV) is the sweet spot most people should train around; Maximum Recoverable Volume (MRV) is the ceiling beyond which more sets stop helping and start hurting recovery.

How many sets per muscle group per week should I do?

Research-informed general guidelines suggest roughly 10-20 sets per muscle group per week for most trained lifters, with beginners needing less to grow and advanced lifters often needing more to keep progressing.

Is more training volume always better?

No — beyond your recoverable volume, additional sets can accumulate fatigue faster than they build muscle, which is why these are ranges with an upper bound, not just "more is better" advice.
