Position size
—

How do you size a forex position?

Decide how much of your account you will lose if the stop is hit (commonly 1–2%). Divide that money by the stop distance in pips times the value of one pip per lot. The result is the lot size that makes a stop-out cost exactly the amount you chose, whatever the pair.

Check pip values with the Pip Value Calculator and the reward side with the Risk Reward Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate lot size?

Lot size = (account balance × risk %) ÷ (stop loss in pips × pip value per lot).

What percentage should I risk per trade?

Many traders risk 0.5–2% of their account per trade so a losing streak does not do serious damage. It is a personal decision.

Does leverage change my position size?

No. Risk-based sizing is independent of leverage; leverage only affects the margin needed to hold the position.
