Mean (average)

How do you find the mean, median and mode?

The mean adds every number and divides by how many there are. The median is the middle value once sorted (or the average of the two middle values). The mode is the value that appears most often; a list can have more than one, or none. Range is largest minus smallest.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate the average of a set of numbers?

Add them up and divide by how many numbers there are. The average of 4, 8 and 12 is 24 ÷ 3 = 8.

What is the difference between mean and median?

The mean uses every value, so outliers pull it; the median is the middle value and is more robust, which is why house prices are quoted as medians.

Can a data set have no mode?

Yes. If every value appears once there is no mode; if several tie, there are several modes.
