Percentage Change Calculator
Pick the question you are asking and enter two numbers. The formula is shown with your values.
How do you calculate percentage change?
Percentage change = (new value − old value) ÷ old value × 100. Going from 50 to 65 is (65 − 50) ÷ 50 = 30% increase. Going back from 65 to 50 is only a 23.1% decrease, because the base is different. The other modes cover the questions people actually ask: what is 15% of 80, what percent is 12 of 60, and what is 200 after a 20% rise.
For prices and sales, the Discount Calculator and VAT Calculator use the same maths.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate percentage increase?
Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. From 40 to 50 is (50 − 40) ÷ 40 × 100 = 25%.
What is 15% of 80?
15% of 80 is 12: multiply 80 by 15 and divide by 100.
Why is a 50% rise followed by a 50% fall not back to the start?
The fall is applied to a bigger number. £100 up 50% is £150; down 50% is £75, not £100.
