How do you find the HCF and LCM?

Break each number into prime factors. The HCF (also called the greatest common divisor, GCD) multiplies the primes they all share, using the smallest power. The LCM multiplies every prime that appears, using the largest power. For 12, 18 and 30 the HCF is 6 and the LCM is 180.

Frequently asked questions

What is the HCF of 12 and 18?

6. The prime factors are 12 = 2² × 3 and 18 = 2 × 3², and the shared part with the smallest powers is 2 × 3.

What is the difference between HCF and LCM?

The HCF is the largest number that divides all of them; the LCM is the smallest number that all of them divide into.

Is HCF the same as GCD?

Yes. HCF (highest common factor) is the UK term, GCD (greatest common divisor) the US one. Both mean the same.
