Quadratic Equation Solver
Enter a, b and c for ax² + bx + c = 0.
How do you solve a quadratic equation?
Use the quadratic formula x = (−b ± √(b² − 4ac)) ÷ 2a. The part under the root, b² − 4ac, is the discriminant: positive gives two real solutions, zero gives one repeated solution and negative gives two complex solutions. For x² − 3x − 4 = 0 the discriminant is 25, so x = 4 or x = −1.

Frequently asked questions
What is the quadratic formula?
x = (−b ± √(b² − 4ac)) ÷ 2a, for any equation ax² + bx + c = 0 where a is not zero.
What does the discriminant tell you?
Whether there are two real roots (positive), one repeated root (zero) or two complex roots (negative).
How do you find the vertex of a parabola?
The vertex is at x = −b ÷ 2a. Substitute that x back in to get y.
